The Product
Hunkar deals in liquefied Petroleum gas (LPG).LPG is a by-product of the crude oil refining process which also produces petrol, diesel, jet A1 and black fuels. It is extremely flammable and requires utmost care in its handling. The largest local supplier of LPG is the refinery in Mombassa which however only produces 25,000MT of LPG per annum with the remainder imported.

LPG is sold either in bulk for large scale users or parked in 3, 6 or 13kg cylinders for the retail market.

The government of Kenya has recently removed VAT on LPG as part of incentives to boost the use of LPG for cooking purposes instead of charcoal and paraffin.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is becoming an increasing popular fuel for cooking in Kenya driven largely by the high cost and unavailability of electricity and by environmental concerns on deforestation.

LPG is widely available from refineries, where it is often flared as a waste product.LPG is transported and stored as a compressed liquid (hence LPG) in cylinders ranging in size between 3kg and 50kg or larger. For household use, gas is conveyed via simple regulators and pipes to cookers or lamps which are specially made for LPG use.

Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) is among the most clean, versatile and modern fuels on the market. The price of gas is competitive and affordable by a wide group of consumers. It gives off lower green house gas emission than alternatives, and use of gas is a direct off-set to deforestation .It is the declared intention of the Kenyan government to encourage the use LPG as a measure to counter deforestation and to this end the government has laid out several policy initiatives that it hopes will reduce the price of LPG for consumers. One of these measures is the standardization of LPG cylinders and valves which allow consumers to choose their LPG supplier based on the cost alone. This measure will encourage cost competition among the LPG suppliers thus reducing the consumer LPG prices.
